Innovating care search & estimating cost
One of the primary goals of the Care Cost Estimator experience was to help Blue Cross members access the quality care and save cost. This feature allowed users to search, find, and estimate the cost of specific medical procedures via the web and mobile app.
From 2018 to 2023, I collaborated closely with the product owner and development teams to discover, design, and continuously improve the care estimator tool. As technology advanced, it brought greater accuracy to cost calculations triggering numerous design improvements. I strategized design process by learning valuable insights into how users engage with the tool and validating solutions during usability studies. My research focused on understanding users’ perceptions of estimation accuracy, comprehension of the content, and the needs for multiple estimates to inform decision making about which health provider to choose.
The design screens illustrate the mobile app’s costs estimator evolution—from a less precise and perhaps heavy content to a simplified and streamlined experience that enables users to easily look up costs and provider detail for each procedure estimate.
According to Ipsos comparative user testing, Blue Cross mobile design ranked higher than Sapphire’s industry-leading web care cost estimator. This achievement validated our efforts in creating more intuitive, accurate, and user-centered experience, ultimately setting a new standard in the industry for usability and member satisfaction.
